The space shuttle Churchill is assigned to observe the Halley's Comet under the command of Col. Tom Carlsen. They see a strange form attached to the comet and Carlsen goes with a team to investigate. They find three humanoid life forms in caskets and they bring them to the Churchill. However, Earth loses contact with the shuttle and the Space Research Center sends another spacecraft to search the Churchill. They find the crew dead and the shuttle burnt and one rescue pod missing. They bring the humanoids to Earth and soon Dr. Hans Fallada and his team discover that the Space Girl is a sort of vampire and drains the life force from people transforming them into zombies. When the authorities find that Col. Tom Carlsen has survived, they summon him to explain what happened in the Churchill. Carlsen tells an incredible story about the three aliens and he teams up with Col. Colin Caine trying to save mankind from the evil vampires from the space. A space shuttle mission investigating Halley's Comet brings back a malevolent race of space vampires who transform most of London's population into zombies. The only survivor of the expedition and British authorities attempt to capture a mysterious but beautiful alien woman who appears responsible. ...but if you like to mix a little H. P. Lovecraft with your science fiction you could do worse.

The source novel's author certainly tried that. I recommend you read Colin Wilson's "The Space Vampires" and judge for yourself. (Today the British author Charles Stross comes to mind.) Lovecraft himself tried that precisely once. I recommend his novel "At the Mountains of Madness" for the same reason.

You can't fault the producers for trying. Realizing that hybridization on the big screen with (then) state-of-the-art FX had to appeal. It may not have been tried before though certainly tried since. The producers spent a lot to get there, and you see every penny on-screen. The production credits are impeccable.

Directing and acting through all this is another matter. Oddly, the mostly British cast and settings help prevent a total breakdown in believability when otherworldly creatures appear in the same shot and all must deal with the end of London as we knew it.

Even the most banal if not outright goofy dialogue adds resonance when uttered by the likes of Frank Finlay, Peter Firth, Aubrey Morris and Patrick Stewart with utmost seriousness. There's a bit of The Bard in all of it, and the exit of Finlay's character is one for the books.

If you expect Steve Railsback to portray a square-jawed "stretch limo" Space Shuttle commander you'll be disappointed, but if you expect him to portray someone driven to near-madness on just about every level by an alien vampire seductress you'll be at least kept curious as to what could possibly happen next...

And I agree with many users who observe that without Mathilda May's sheer physical presence the drive to find, capture and better understand the "Space Girl" would fall roundly upon its tokhes.

The musical score by Henry Mancini, himself no stranger to the horror-sci-fi mix, is just as driven, and if you think you've heard the main theme elsewhere you're probably correct.

Finally, after all these years I viewed the longer "international cut." I'd always thought the version I'd viewed on Stateside television a tad rushed even with relentless commercial interruptions, though also thought that reflected Tobe Hooper's drive to wrap things as coherently as allowed under budgetary and scheduling constraints.

Now I'm not so sure of that. The longer version is somewhat more erotic, carnal and visceral but not appreciably more coherent. Still, that doesn't appear for want of trying. So if you've not seen this give it a try...though if that's in front of the kids you've some explaining to do. Colin Wilson's book 'Space Vampires' was a bit of a spin-off of his earlier book 'The Mind Parasites'. The book was good and whilst the movie deviated somewhat (less philosophy to think about, more special effects to look at) I thought it quite good too. Certainly, to get an acceptable movie they couldn't have done much else than make the changes they did. 2 real possibilities, firstly that they're both dead and their energy released as with the rest of the victims. Secondly that they are still alive and preserved on the ship and will return with Halley's comet in the mid 21st centuary Open to interpretation, either the energy of the human souls has been used to revive the vampires in their crystal coffins or the humans have actually become the new vampires and are preserved until the ship returns to Earth with Halley's comet. The only released version in Germany e.g. is the Theatrical Version. In the UK and US on the other hand, the only available DVD Version is the longer Original Version, referred to as Director's Cut. Lots of footage got cut out but most of the cuts were probably made for pace. Lots of scenes refering to vampires have been removed. Apart from that, the investigations of incidents with vampires, which have been cut out from the Theatrical Version, are much shorter as well. Some scenes really benefit from this because the timing is better but in most cases, the Director's Cut is the better and more convincing version. In total there are more than 100 hundred differences between both versions resulting in a difference of more than 14 minutes.
